Sioux Falls, SD – August 28, 2025
Cleveland Elementary is proud to announce its selection as one of three schools in the Sioux Falls School District to receive a dedicated mentoring recruiter through a newly launched initiative focused on increasing student support and connection. This effort is part of a broader community partnership aimed at expanding access to positive adult role models for students in need of guidance, encouragement, and connection.
The announcement was made during a press conference held at Cleveland this morning, which will air on local news stations tonight and be featured on KLRN in the coming weeks. The atmosphere was filled with enthusiasm and hope as school leaders, community partners, and local media gathered to celebrate this exciting development.
Building a Network of Support
The initiative was born out of a shared vision between the Sioux Falls School District and community partners seeking to enhance school-based mentoring. With support from the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation and several generous local donors, the two-year project aims to significantly increase the number of mentors working directly with students.
“Mentoring is one of the most impactful ways we can support the academic, social, and emotional well-being of our students,” said Dr. Stefani, Principal of Cleveland Elementary. “Having a mentoring recruiter will allow us to connect more students with caring adults who can help guide and encourage them.”
The Power of Mentorship
The benefits of mentoring are well-documented. According to MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership:
Students who meet regularly with a mentor are 55% more likely to enroll in college.
They are 46% less likely to start using illegal drugs and 52% less likely to skip a day of school.
Youth with mentors are more likely to have positive attitudes toward school and stronger relationships with peers and teachers.
For many students, particularly those facing social or economic challenges, a mentor can be the consistent, supportive presence that changes the trajectory of their lives.
A Community-Driven Effort
This initiative reflects a growing recognition that student success is a shared responsibility—one that extends beyond the classroom. The mentoring recruiter at Cleveland will work closely with school staff and local organizations to identify students who would benefit from mentorship and actively recruit, train, and match volunteer mentors from the community.
"We’re incredibly grateful to be part of this effort," said Dr. Stefani. “This opportunity aligns perfectly with our mission: Cleveland Community: Working together to achieve and succeed. We look forward to building stronger connections between our students and the caring adults in our community.”
